The 2007 ASCAP/SEAMUS Student Commission

BACKGROUND

In 1991, the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) and the SEAMUS Board of Directors banded together to recognize a young composer from each national conference whose work showed great promise and potential. Thus was born the ASCAP/SEAMUS Student Composer Award. The prize consisted of a plaque, a modest honorarium, and a place on the SEAMUS Compact Disc Series. In 1995, the award became a commission. The winning composer was invited to write a new piece to be premiered at the next SEAMUS national conference and included on the SEAMUS CD. Beginning in 1998, four finalists were invited to the national conference to hear their works performed. The SEAMUS Board of Directors then selected a first and second prize winner, both of whom received commissions, guaranteed performances on the following year's conference, and places on the annual conference CD.

CALL FOR SCORES

The Society for Electro-Acoustic Music in the United States (SEAMUS) is announcing a call for submissions to the 2007 ASCAP/SEAMUS Student Commission Competition.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

The ASCAP/SEAMUS Student Commission is a program to commission new electro-acoustic compositions from student composers. The purpose of this program is to stimulate student participation in SEAMUS activities, and to encourage young composers to pursue creative endeavors in electroacoustic music. The program is administered by SEAMUS and funded by the American Society for Composers, Authors and Publishers <http://www.ascap.com/> (ASCAP).

A selection committee appointed by the SEAMUS board of directors reviews all submissions and selects four finalists. All finalists selected by the committee will have their works performed at the 2007 SEAMUS National Conference at the University of Oregon. During the conference, the SEAMUS Board of Directors will review the works of the finalists and select the winner(s). The winners will be commissioned to write new works to be premiered one year later, at the next SEAMUS conference.

A maximum of two prizes may be awarded. The first prize winner of the ASCAP/SEAMUS Student Commission will receive the following: a commission fee of $1250 to write a new work to be performed at the 2008 SEAMUS National Conference, a certificate in recognition of the commission, and inclusion of the winning work submitted for the competition on the SEAMUS Compact Disc Series. If awarded, the second prize winner of the ASCAP/SEAMUS Student Commission will receive the following: a commission fee of $750 to write a new work to be performed at the 2008 SEAMUS National Conference, and a certificate in recognition of the commission. Both commissioned pieces will then be featured on the SEAMUS web site for the ensuing year, and both will be eligible for inclusion on the SEAMUS CD, if after the premieres their works are selected by the attendees at the conference.

RULES FOR SUBMISSION

Composers may submit only one work for consideration. The work under consideration must be electroacoustic in genre, and adhere to the same content, instrumentation and length guidelines as the SEAMUS National Conference. That is, it should be no more than 12 minutes in length, written for performers available at the National Conference, or the composer must be able to provide necessary performers to present the work.

There are no submission fees for this competition. Submissions will not be returned unless accompanied by a self-addressed stamped envelope.
