On behalf of the entire Board of Directors, I am pleased to announce the release the first module of our automated services on SEAMUSONLINE ~ the Membership Database and individual member portals.

New Features include:

• On-line Membership. You may become a member of SEAMUS instantly and on-line via a Verisign 124-bit encrypted secure socket, using a Mastercard, Visa, or bank debit cards. Manual payments will still be accepted, go to the JOIN navbar tabfor instructions on how to do that.

• On-line Renewal. Existing SEAMUS members will also be able to make their annual dues payment online, via a Verisign 124-bit encrypted secure socket using their Mastercard, Visa, or bank debit cards. Manual payments will still be accepted, go to the JOIN navbar tabfor instructions on how to do that.

• Automated Renewal Notices. Members will now be informed via email if your membership is coming due or has expired. In fact, the first series of letters will be sent out in the next day. Once logged in, you will be prompted on your portal home page on what to do to pay your dues.

The Individual Members Portals will afford the following new features:

• Account Editing. SEAMUS members will have access to their own data and may change that instantly. Members can now update their account information (mailing address, email address and web site url) and in addition, will now be able to enter your C.V. or bio into the database.

You will also be able to verify your account type and your renewal date in this area of the portal.

• Change Password. Members can change your members portal access password instantly at any time

• Members Area. We will be launching the SEAMUS Member's Area which will provide a host of services and benefits exclusively for registered SEAMUS members. The portal will include upcoming event schedules, downloadable PDFs of past SEAMUS Newsletters and Journals, even technical papers from previous National Conferences. Among other features, the members area will also become your gateway to the SEAMUSforum.

• Security. SEAMUSONLINE does not have access to user passwords, nor does it store credit or debit card information as these transactions are not performed on our site, but on the Verisign server, which can be verified by noting the https:// suffix in the address line once that handoff has occurred.

In conclusion, I think we have just taken a huge step forward in the level of service we are able to provide to our members. And once again, as president, on behalf of all the membership, I would like to thank those people whose hard work and creative thinking has made this possible:

Elainie Lillios, our former Vice President for Membership, for conceiving the idea of putting our member database online and for doing the initial research on the feasibility and costs associated with implementing it.

Journal SEAMUS Editors appointed

We are very pleased to announce that we have completed our Journal SEAMUS/ staff with the addition of two new editors.

Tae Hong Park has agreed to serve as Managing Editor, and will, therefore, will coordinate all the submissions, send materials out for review, collate the results of the jury, and then pass them along to the Editor if they are acceptable, or work with the author on suggested revisions.

Clay Chaplin has agreed to serve as the Assistant Editor of Festivals and Conferences. He will identify events and potential reviewers, and coordinate submissions.

The editors encourage contributions in the form of papers, articles and review items from all members of the electro-acoustic music community, including composers, performers, and researchers. Areas of interest include the aesthetics, theory, technology, and history of electro-acoustic music in the United States. All contributions are reviewed by a jury of SEAMUS members.

SEAMUS Celebrates 20th Anniversary

2004 marks the 20th anniversary of the Society for Electro-Acoustic for the United States. From its original 10 members, SEAMUS has grown into one of the premiere national societies for electro-acoustic music. Hsiao-Lan Wang, a native of Taiwan, composes extensively for orchestra, chamber ensembles, solo instruments, and electronic media. Her music investigates the fundamental elements of musical communication through new timbral, formal, and technological relationships. As a composer, her talent and efforts have attained international acclaim including prizes, awards, and major performances from venues such as: Pauline Oliveros Prize and Libby Larsen Prize from IAWM, Standard Awards from American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP), second prize in the third Pierre Schaeffer Computer Music Competition (Italy), fianlist in the Craig and Janet Swan Composer Prize for Orchestra and the Composers Competition by Chamber Orchestra of Denton, final performers selection by American Composers Forum - Sonic Circuits, a research grant from Women's Council of UMKC, and performances at Logos Foundation (Belgium) and Dutch National Radio. Ms. Wang is also a frequent participant at music festivals throughout the United States.

In addition to her career as a composer, Ms. Wang extends her musical platform to both performing and conducting. Being an exceptional yangchin (Chinese dulcimer) player, she has participated in numerous performances in Taiwan and the United States. One of her most performed works Refrain for yangchin and tape has been frequently programmed on music festivals including SEAMUS. As a conductor, for both pre-twentieth century and contemporary music, she has continuously conducted works by both developing and established composers of our time.

Ms. Wang received her BA in Music Composition and Theory from the National Institute of the Arts (Taipei, Taiwan) and MM in composition from the University of Missouri-Kansas City. She is currently pursuing a DMA degree in composition at the University of North Texas, and is a teaching fellow in the division of composition studies.
