| New SEAMUSONLINE Automated Members Services |
|
On behalf of the entire Board of Directors, I am pleased to announce the release the first module of our automated services on SEAMUSONLINE ~ the Membership Database and individual member portals.
New Features include:
On-line Membership. You may become a member of SEAMUS instantly and on-line via a Verisign 124-bit encrypted secure socket, using a Mastercard, Visa, or bank debit cards. Manual payments will still be accepted, go to the JOIN navbar tabfor instructions on how to do that.
On-line Renewal. Existing SEAMUS members will also be able to make their annual dues payment online, via a Verisign 124-bit encrypted secure socket using their Mastercard, Visa, or bank debit cards. Manual payments will still be accepted, go to the JOIN navbar tabfor instructions on how to do that.
Automated Renewal Notices. Members will now be informed via email if your membership is coming due or has expired. In fact, the first series of letters will be sent out in the next day. Once logged in, you will be prompted on your portal home page on what to do to pay your dues.
The Individual Members Portals will afford the following new features:
Account Editing. SEAMUS members will have access to their own data and may change that instantly. Members can now update their account information (mailing address, email address and web site url) and in addition, will now be able to enter your C.V. or bio into the database.
You will also be able to verify your account type and your renewal date in this area of the portal.
Change Password. Members can change your members portal access password instantly at any time
Members Area. We will be launching the SEAMUS Member's Area which will provide a host of services and benefits exclusively for registered SEAMUS members. The portal will include upcoming event schedules, downloadable PDFs of past SEAMUS Newsletters and Journals, even technical papers from previous National Conferences. Among other features, the members area will also become your gateway to the SEAMUSforum.
Security. SEAMUSONLINE does not have access to user passwords, nor does it store credit or debit card information as these transactions are not performed on our site, but on the Verisign server, which can be verified by noting the https:// suffix in the address line once that handoff has occurred.
In conclusion, I think we have just taken a huge step forward in the level of service we are able to provide to our members. And once again, as president, on behalf of all the membership, I would like to thank those people whose hard work and creative thinking has made this possible:
Elainie Lillios, our former Vice President for Membership, for conceiving the idea of putting our member database online and for doing the initial research on the feasibility and costs associated with implementing it.
Brian Belet, Vice President for Membership, and Michael Angell, Treasurer, for working out the details of renewals, merchant accounts, and online payments.
Peter Grenader, Web Master, for all of his hard work in designing our new web site and keeping all of us on track during the development.
Matthew McCabe and Matt Avitable of Escapement Arts and Media for authoring the database.
SEAMUS Members: Allen Strange, Jason Thomas, Chris Preissing, Drew Wheeler, for serving as beta testers
This was a team effort, and we have a great team!
Sincerely yours,
Russell Pinkston, President

| SEAMUS Member Focus : Mark Zaki |
|
A musician with many diverse interests, Mark Zaki has created works that range from traditional chamber music to new media and music for film. Also an active violinist and violist, Zaki was one of the first musicians to use and explore the Zeta (MIDI) violin as an instrument for experimental composition and performance. Demonstrating a wide range of compositional techniques, his music has incorporated and transformed elements from a variety of traditional and popular musical forms, serial procedures, improvisatory contexts and acousmatic practice into a highly idiosyncratic style.
His most recent projects include an acousmatic score for the film The Eyes of van Gogh, a score for the documentary The Political Dr. Seuss (which was broadcast nationally on PBS October 26), and a new media installation Absence, Presence which premiered this past summer at the California Museum of Photography in Riverside, CA in a six week exhibition called Bits and Pieces.
His work has been presented by the Comunidad Electroacoustica de Chile (Santiago), the Holland Festival Oude Muziek (Utrecht), the Not Still Art Festival (NYC), the International Computer Music Conference (Miami 2004), Nuit Bleue (France), Electrolune (France), Primavera en La Habana (Cuba), Musica Nova (Prague), the Seoul International Computer Music Festival, the SEAMUS National Conference, the Florida Electronic Music Festival, the NWEAMO Festival (San Diego), among others and in the Canadian Electroacoustic Communitys CD project DisContact! III. Mark also recently collaborated with director Annie Loui and video artist Antoinette LaFarge scoring their immersive theater and multimedia work Reading Frankenstein.
Zaki includes among his teachers Paul Lansky, Steven Mackey, Charles Wuorinen and Arnold Steinhardt. He has doctoral degrees in composition and music technology from Princeton University and in violin/viola performance from Rutgers University. Currently, he divides his time between New York City and Los Angeles. Partial Discography
